  According to China Earthquake Networks: An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred in Afghanistan at 11:11 on October 7, 2023.The epicenter was located at 34.70 degrees north latitude and 61.90 degrees east longitude. The epicenter of the earthquake is only 40 kilometers away from Herat, the fourth largest city in Afghanistan, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

  According to the latest news from Afghanistan, as of the evening of the 8th local time, the earthquake has caused 2445 deaths and over 9200 injuries. The relevant departments of the Afghan Interim Government and the Herat Provincial Government have urgently dispatched rescue teams to provide material assistance to the affected residents. Multiple non-governmental organizations have also actively participated and provided food, drinking water, and temporary shelter for the victims.

  The National Cryosphere Desert Data Center (NCDC) for Glaciology and Permafrost Desert collects and prepares basic geographic data, satellite remote sensing data, population data, topographic data and other emergency response scientific data based on disaster situations.
